28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Soseaua Industriala: A scene outside the Constanta bus depot and a few metres from the entrance to the tramway depot. What would you give for a glass of fresh milk from these cows, grazing in all kinds of litter and filth? Although Constanta claims to be a tourist and holiday destination, this part of town looks more like the Third World than a civilised country.

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Strada Zorelelor: The terminal loop for the trams in this part of town was at the end of this narrow street, where two trams together made it difficult for any other traffic to pass. Romanian V3A and Tatra KT4-D trams seemed to be used indescriminately, both appearing entirely at random on either of the two routes.

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Strada Zorelelor: Ex-Berlin Tatra KT4-D tram #184 just before the end of Route 102, which ran from here across the city to the tramway depot in the industrial area. These Tatra cars were in much better condition than the Romanian V3A trams - which continued to be used alongside the Tatras, but were gradually falling apart. Within a few weeks, the system was closed for good, anyway.

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Strada Zorelelor: Constanta tramways opened in 1984, the same time as several other Romanian cities because Government decree required them, often to link housing areas to heavy industry. The Constanta system comprised just two routes and was equipped with a number of URAC-designed V3A trams built by the Electrocomputere works in Craiova. These cars carried quite large numbers of passengers, but were crude in design and not particularly popular, so were later joined by some ex-Berlin surplus Tatra KT4-D trams. Here, a V3A nears the city terminus of Line 102, which overlooked the Black Sea and the beach.

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Soseaua Industriala: The bucolic entrance to Constanta`s tramway depot, with cows grazing untroubled in the road outside and numerous stray dogs scratching in the dirt. Note the very elaborate sign above the entrance road - probably the most valuable thing here, given the state of most of the trams inside! The works truck referenced in the photo description is in the far distance.

Srapping here seemed to be a gradual process, with just some parte being removed as were needed to keep other vehicles on the road. Everything is gone now....

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - trolleybus depot, Sector 2: Another Rocar 212E clingin on to operational life at the Constanta trolleybus depot. Most of this model had already been withdrawn by the time I visited and there appeared to be a policy of cannibalisation, just to keep a few remaining buses fit for service. When the system finally closed down, one or two of the newer, articulated trolleybuses went on for further use in the city of Piatra Neamt, but all others were scrapped.

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Strada Traian: The trams and trolleybuses in the Black Sea city of Constanta are now just a memory. In 2008, both systems were still operating (just), although they did not last much longer and were becoming very badly maintained, with many vehicles awaiting scrapping. Here is one of the small fleet of Rocar 212E trolleybuses, first placed into service in 1998, which were among the first one to go.

Car #178 again, this time at the far terminus overlooking the Black Sea (which isn’t, any more than the River Danube is blue –just a dirty grey colour). By this time, tram routes through the centre of the city had already closed, leaving this route around the ring road, away from the town centre and sea shore.

28 september 2008 - Constanta (RO) - Strada Celulozei. Another Tatra in the street outside the depot – what a dump! I wonder who needed to come here, and why a tramway was needed in the first place? Probably it would have closed much sooner, had the depot not been here in this desolate place.

28 september 2008 - Constanta (RO) – depou/zajezdnia. A Tatra KT4D at rest in the depot. These cars still looked quite smart in their Berlin livery and were quite well kept, at least externally. After the Constanta system closed, all the trams remained in the depot for many months, but I don’t think that even the Tatras ever found a buyer, so were probably scrapped eventually.

Although considerably newer (and much bigger) than the Tatras imported from Germany, these were not as well regarded, probably because of their pretty basic Romanian construction and lack of proper maintenance.

28 september 2008 - Constanta (RO) - Strada Celulozei. Electric transport in Constanta wasn’t (constant) – the last two remaining tram routes closed in November 2008, just a short time after our visit, and the trolleybus lines didn’t last much longer, so we were fortunate to see both in operation. Here, one of the sixteen ex-Berlin KT4D trams turns outside the depot entrance. In these last days, all tracks and equipment were badly worn, as no maintenance appeared to have taken place for some time - new buses were already arriving to take over.

6 september 2010 - Konstanca, Bulevardul I.C. Bratianu. Pożegnalne zdjęcie z tej serii więc, podobnie jak ten trajtek, czas zjechać do bazy. W Konstancy trolejbusy uczyniły to samo po raz ostatni 3 grudnia 2010 r. i więcej już raczej nie wyjadą. Na koniec więc taki oto debiut pojazdu na TWB. Do pełni szczęścia brakuje wozu 636...

6 september 2010 - Konstanca, Bulevardul I.C. Bratianu. Na moich wrażeniach z tego kraju zaważyło też pewnie kilka niemiłych zdarzeń. Po przybyciu do Konstancy próbowali nas okraść kieszonkowcy (próba na szczęście nieudana), dwukrotnie oszukano nas (na drobne co prawda kwoty, ale jednak) przy kupnie biletów kolejowych, natomiast w hotelu w Bukareszcie policzono nam wyższą opłatę niż podana w potwierdzeniu rezerwacji (pieniądze odzyskane dopiero po kilkumiesięcznej korespondencji z centralą, proponowany rabat na kolejny pobyt w hotelu tej sieci odrzuciliśmy, bez jaj). W każdym razie po takich akcjach względem turystów, trudno się dziwić, że Rumuni mają w Europie opinię oszustów i złodziei. No i najgorsze - dzikie psy atakujące ludzi na ulicach - nic tak nie psuje urlopu jak brak poczucia bezpieczeństwa!!! Z przykrością stwierdzam, że jakoś nie ciągnie mnie z powrotem...

7 september 2010 - Konstanca, Bulevardul I.C. Bratianu. Porównanie poziomu rozwoju i życia w Bułgarii i Rumuni wychodzi zdecydowanie na korzyść tego drugiego państwa. W Bułgarii czas jakby się zatrzymał, nie widać też praktycznie żadnych inwestycji choćby z wykorzystaniem środków unijnych (te zresztą zostały wstrzymane za korupcję). Natomiast w Rumuni poziom życia nie jest może najwyższy, ale widać, że próbują wykorzystać swoją szansę. Nie mniej trochę jestem zawiedziony tym krajem. Media co rusz informują, że poziom rozwoju zbliżony jest tu do polskiego. Na podstawie wrażeń z kilkudniowego pobytu, mogę powiedzieć, że to bzdura! Jeszcze im sporo brakuje...

6 september 2010 - Konstanca, Strada Mihai Viteazu x Strada Traian. Niech was nie zmyli napis na wyświetlaczu. Trolejbus zmierza akurat w przeciwnym kierunku, ale do informacji pasażerskiej podchodzi się tu nadzwyczaj lajtowo. Rozkłady na przystankach to również rzecz rzadka. Na przystanku w tle (po prawej) akurat były i to w wersji lux ze schematem połączeń (nigdzie indziej nie spotkałem).

6 september 2010 - Konstanca, Strada I.G. Duca x Bulevardul Ferdinand. Jadąc w kierunku pętli C.F.R. Palas, linia 48 zamiast jechać najkrótszą drogą, objeżdża fragment centrum nieco naokoło ulicami: Viteazu, Bratescu i Duca. W przeciwną stronę trolejbusy jeżdżą najkrótszą trasą przez Bulevardul Ferdinand.

7 september 2010 - Konstanca, Bulevardul Ferdinand x Strada Theodor Burada. Trolejbus wjeżdża na znajdujący się zupełnie na uboczu przystanek końcowy przy dworcu kolejowym. Trochę szkoda, że nie zadano sobie trudu powieszenia kilkudziesięciu metrów drutu na głównym placu vis a vis głównego wejścia do budynku dworca.
